Scoutmaster Message

The Trail to Eagle

This message is to those of you who are working on your Eagle, however, everyone should read carefully. The requirements are spelled out rather clearly in your handbook. Requirements 1 through 3 deal with being active, the merit badges needed and Scout spirit.

With this in mind, I would like to call your attention to requirement numbers 4 & 5. You must serve actively in a position of responsibility for 6 months. Just because you hold the position doesn't mean that you are serving the position. This requirement must be met for the Eagle rank. If you only hold a position you are making sure that this line stays blank.

More importantly is requirement 5. It reads: "While a Life Scout, plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to any religious institution, any school or your community. The project ideas must be approved by your Scoutmaster and troop committee and approved by the council or district before you start."

In order for you to "give leadership to others" you must assume that others will come to help you on your project. What you have to ask yourself is will they? Are the other members of your troop willing to give up their free time to come and lend a hand? What have you given to them in order for them to give to you? Yes, a Scout is helpful, but if all you do at the meeting is ignore the others how will they get to know you and feel good about helping? Do you give them a helping hand when they need it? Do you give them leadership? Are you willing to give to them?

If you can answer positively to the questions I have asked then you have nothing to worry about. If not then you have lots of work ahead of you.

Yours in Scouting,
